Any business entity except (Ministries / Departments of Central or State Government and persons importing or exporting goods for personal use not connected with trade or manufacture or agriculture), which imports or expors any goods or services, it needs to have Import Export Code (IEC). IEC is a 10 digit code, issued by the office of the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), DGFT is set up under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. Each state has it's jurisdictional office.
Any business which intends to import or export goods or services for commercial purpose need to apply for it.

ICEGATE is the Indian Customs Electronic Gateway (ICEGATE) is the national portal of Indian Customs of Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) that provides e-filing services to the Trade, Cargo Carriers and other Trading Partners electronically. To facilitate trade and to avoid separate registration of importers and exporters at various custom houses under the Indian Customs EDI system, Customs & DGFT have established connectivity through ICEGATE. Once you allpy IEC code, the DGFT will issue it and it transfers this informatoin to Customs ICEGATE. Where you can check the satus of IEC Custom BIN Status. The importer or expoerter has to check the status of correctness of IEC both at DGFT and Customs, if the data is same, it is ok otherwise, you have to contact the DGFT and make the data corrected. Plese note that if both the DGFT and Cusotms data are same, then there is no problems in importing or exporting goods or services.
For availing authorization to import or export or any other benefit or concession under Foreign Trade Policy 2015-2020, as also to avail the services or guidance, exporters are required to obtain RCMC granted by the concerned Export Promotion Councils/FIEO/Commodity Boards/Authorities. An application for obtaining RCMC is required to be made in ANF 2C to register and becoming member of Export Promotion Council or Federation of Indian Exports Organisation (FIEO). Exporter should declare his main line of business and obtain RCMC from the Council which is concerned with the product of his main line of business. Multi-product exporters and products not covered under any EPC can obtain RCMC from FIEO. The validity of RCMC is 5 years from 1st April to 31st March.
